It is a risk factor for early death and surgical intervention on the tricuspid valve might be necessary in up to 25% of all patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome in the first 10 years of life. The underlying mechanisms leading to the regurgitant valve are variable and likewise a variety of repair techniques have been reported.
